so you mean I've got to take shoes with me if I want to go out in oz? And there I was thinking I could get away with just some hiking boots and 2 pairs of flip flops!

I think it is a bit of an exaggeration about the open toe shoes thing and people not being served if they even show that have had a drink.

I am from NSW and have gone into pubs and clubs across the state and country with open toe shoes on lots and lots of occasions and have never been kicked out or questioned. Things are the only shows that may sometimes be questioned but only in relatively formal establishments and generally only in the big cities.

I am also partial to a few drinks - as are most people and the only times i have seen people refused to be served are when they are inebriated and everyone can see it - ie. falling over everywhere etc. I agree that it is mad that people can sue for no reason but most Aussie establishments have not gone mad in the hope of avoiding this, the policy is the same as most places in the western world.

Basically i would say look around and see what others are wearing, chances are (especially in summer) they will be wearing sandals and things and drinking merrily!

I agree with Natdoog, I regularly go into pubs with sandals on and I can't see flip flops being a problem either. In fact, I can't see going in barefoot being much of a problem if that's your thing!

There was a pub nearby here with a sign saying - "no shoes, no entry" .. by the time we saw it the pub had been shut down and scribbled next to the sign was ", no customers, no pub" .. hehe
