Travel Forums North America Is Mexico safe? Any recommendations?

Hi everyone :)

I'm thinking about travelling to Mexico for a month very soon and I'm wondering if people can confirm how safe it is? I'm an Australian female in my late 20s - I have black hair/brown skin though which might help me blend in a bit.

I have travelled around Colombia before and even lived in Medellin for a few months and I felt very safe in that country - despite how "dangerous" people think it is, so I'm hoping this will also be the case in Mexico. I know that some places should be avoided. Can anyone give me any advice on this?

Also, do people have recommendations on where to visit? So far, I'm keen on Mexico city, Queretaro, Puebla, Guadalajara and Oaxaca...any advice would be really appreciated! I might even swing by Guatemala if I can squeeze it all in. I prefer old colonial towns and mountains over beaches (I don't want to run into too many 'girls gone wild' Americans, is what I mean).

first issue is to drop the paranoia, yes southern mexico is safe and known to be safe across the internet.

Southern Mexico is safer than most regions of that country. Recommend you stay up to date with travel advisories, like the one published by the US Dept of State which gives a state-by-state listing of issues, if any. Have fun. :)

Reporting from Cabo, it is safe as common sense is, here -snip- of what you can find here.
So anytime some some tourist had been robbed or had any security issue, it is on his own fault, it is not like there are some gang in the streets having trouble with people... as it says Safety is as Safety Does.
Stay safe, stay smart. Cheers

Other towns I would visit are Guanajuato and San Miguel de Allende. Both very safe and big tourist destinations. Guanajuato is a United Nations World Heritage Site (the whole city), famous for its underground streets and beautiful downtown area.
One state to avoid would be Sinaloa, and the two towns I would definitely avoid would be Ciudad Juarez in the far northern state of Chihuahua (just across from the city of El Paso, Texas, USA) and Apatzingan in Michoacan state.

Enjoy your trip.
