Suggest avoiding Srinagar, which is experiencing continued violence, resulting in many injuries and deaths. I traveled with a friend in Jammu-Kashmir in August; and we decided not to visit Srinagar after travelers who had been there told us of the difficulties of getting in and out; and the closure of businesses, schools and roads. Our friends in India, who are experienced travelers, also advised us not to go. We waited to see if the situation improved; but it did not. So we didn't go, backtracking to elsewhere in Jammu-Kashmir.

Here's an update:

Please note that some travel in northern India, particularly in the Himalayas, is seasonal. So as winter approaches, some shops, lodging and roads will be closed. Check before you go.

Hi Patti,

It is good to hear that you are traveling to India. It will be great if you include south India in your trip. The most famous tourist attractions like ooty, kodaikanal, Mysoor, Alleppey, Kerala, Munnar, Thekkady etc are in South India. If you like beaches and backwaters you can choose Alleppey, there you can enjoy beautiful backwaters like Punnamada and Alleppey beach together. Houseboats and lake resorts stay in Alleppey will be different experience for you. If you like hill stations you can go for Munnar, Ooty etc. Cliff resort stay will be good for you in hill stations :)
