Well given your ability to write an intelligent post here, I am not surprised you can't find work. Being organized would not seem to be your strong point Qwanderer, no offense intended.

Did you post just to make a statement regarding your current situation? If so, you achieved that objective. If on the other hand you were posting hoping to find some help in resolving your situation, you wrote nothing that is likely to get you any relevant advice.

Well OldPro my post did what I wanted, some attention! Thank you for that!

Yes OldPro I am looking for work in Melbourne! Any leads.......? My travel companion is supply teaching in a school, getting lots of work.
I am looking for waitressing or hostessing, bartending in a restaurant or pub. Maybe a sales clerk in a shop- In Canada I worked in a high end jewellery store for years.

......oh and the apartments! We're looking for a two bedroom preferably! And we are having no luck securing a place. We've been at the hostel for 3 weeks already.

So so.......should anyone have leads or ideas we would love to know? ;)

Still no useful information on which advice could be offered.

Can you legally work in Australia? You may or may not be there on a WHV. You wouldn't be the first person on a tourist visa to think they can just take a job if they want to.
When knocking on doors and asking if work is available, how long do you say you plan to be around?
What qualifications for waitressing, bartending, etc. do you have?
What references from past employers do you have?
How much are you willing to pay for renting a 2 bedroom in Melbourne?

Someone could find a job and rent an apartment today IF they were qualified and willing to pay a realistic rent. It isn't as if there is not one job in Melbourne or one apartment to rent. So the question is where are YOU falling down in how you are going about it. How many apartments did you arrange to view on arrival and did you have a resume prepared?

For example, here are 119 waitress jobs listed in Melbourne in the last 30 days. How many of them have you applied for?

Before going to Australia did you research jobs? Do you know what an RSA is and do you have one to work in restaurants and bars in Australia?

You could have done an online RSA course while still in Canada, got your certificate and had your resume ready on your arrival.

Here are furnished apartments listed on Gumtree for rent.

Why are none of them suitable for you?
