Sorry if this has ever been asked, but there are sooooo many threads and honestly once I got to the 10th page I had to give up, so I?m just going to ask. Is it true that the bugs are huge down there?? and I heard this one thing, that you need to turn your shoes upside down and tap them to make sure nothing comes out, like some giant spider that is poisonous, and you have to shake out your bed sheets before you jump in (spiders really scare me and in Canada we only have little ones, so I?m thinking that if those little suckers get to me, I might have a coronary if I were to see a really big one). But I was thinking of moving there, so just kind of wanted the inside scoop.

LOL !!! That's really, really funny-sorry to be laughing at your made me chuckle no end!

I'm not exactly that keen on spiders-well huge one's i mean but well i don't know what i'm rambling on about really! lol! I have heard that too but i'm assuming it's more than likely if you are in/staying around out-of-town parts, outback etc!

I am going to Oz and i get bitten like anything over in the UK so god knows what i'll be like when i'm over there!!!

as for bugs in australia its like that in the more rural areas and outback regions but if you're sticking to the cities and built-up places then you shouldn't have too many problems!! often the flies can be bad in the summer months, but then again this is probably only really noticeable in rural areas, same goes for snakes and things like that. i really wouldn't worry about it, unless you're heading into the outback, and then its just all part of the experience.

I've been tooling around Oz for about 2.5 weeks now. I've been through Victoria, Queensland, and now in New South Whales. In that time I've come accross 1 bug that was big enough to mention. It was what they call a Huntsman spider.. It was a pretty big thing, but oddly enough according to Peter.. It's the most harmless spider in Oz... I've been out on some rainforest walks and out in the bush a bit in Queensland and have yet to come across any of Oz's famous deadly bugs. I'm sure there are some around, but I don't think you're very likely to encounter hordes of them anywhere.

Well all your posts have made me feel better about that, so thank you.

I'll just make sure I stay out of the outback, that's for sure.

An I guess as long as I have my cat with me then she'll protect me from those mean, nasty spiders (she's been doing a good job so far).

ummm... Girly have you looked into the rules about bringing foreign animals into Oz?

I think it would be easier to import heroin than a cat from what I have seen

yes as ian so eloquently puts it

I think it would be easier to import heroin than a cat from what I have seen

australia has tough quarantine laws and is strict on bringing things into the country. you might want to look into it, because it may mean your cat has to spend a lot of time away from you, locked up in quarantine.

and i wouldn't discount the outback just because of the chance of a few bugs and creepy crawlies. it can be a great place and some of the people you'll meet, you're guaranteed to remember for ever.

sorry about the drug reference... I'm in Sydney right now and spent part of last night in King's Cross... Interesting scene, but not much fear of the cops in the dealers out there.

Anyways.. sorry about the reference.
