Tokyo - day trips and JR pass

Travel Forums Asia Tokyo - day trips and JR pass

I'm planning to spend 8 days or so in Tokyo next month; I'm going to base myself there and do some day trips out of the city, as there's loads I haven't seen in that area and I've travelled other parts of the country before. I'm thinking of the places below as day trips - can anyone suggest any places I've missed or any I should omit? Also is it worth getting a 7 day JR pass for this itinerary?

- Hakone
- Nikko
- Yokahama
- Kamakura
- Mt Fuji region?

Thanks!

For the Hakone and Mt Fuji region, it's possible to get a travel pass out of and returning to Shinjuku. It covers all transport within that region including the cable-car and the pirate boats on Lake Ashi. See http://www.odakyu.jp/english/deels/freepass/fujihakone/

Thank you - I hadn't heard of this pass so I'll look into it.

From initial investigations it appears it's nowhere near worth me getting a JR Pass.

I am researching the Hakone area for a trip I have booked in September ..

Please write about your trip when you come back. I am sure it will be of use to me.

Hi Steve

I didn't go to Hakone in the end; the only trip out of Tokyo I did was to Mount Takao which was excellent. Let me know if you need any further info about that.

I had not even considered that, should I?

i'd highly recommend it - I had a lovely day there. It's a pretty walk with good views on the way up and fantastic views from the top. If it's a clear day you can see Mt Fuji, as I was able to. There are temples and food stalls on the way up, and various different trails you can take. it's only 50 minutes on the train from Shinjuku.

Well that sounds like a plan. I am passing through Tokyo on my way to Myanmar in September. Thanks for the recommendation.
