John here 24 from UK!
So I'm looking to hit up Australia in January I know it's a while away but I cannot stop thinking about how scary it feels to go it alone!?
Firstly I'm wondering if there are any chat room type places you can meet people beforehand maybe to meet up in Aus? I'm looking to work and at the same time see what Aus has to offer!!
Also do you think it's better to book and go or book with someone who sorts out hostels ect?
And lastly, I know there's no end all answer but what sort of money do you think would be good to take so I don't have to worry about finding work as soon as I get there?
And help advise would be awesome?
I'm off to Australia in November, so will be around when you're there in January. I'm planning on flying into Sydney and staying there until at least January (want to be there for Xmas and NYE). Then at some point after I'll spend a while traveling up the coast before doing my fruit picking/farming somewhere to get my second year visa. I'm also going to be going on my own! Really excited! In terms of money I'm not sure...I'm going to take about £10,000 but I want to work a lot and don't want to spend it all. I'm 29 so a bit worried I'll be a lot older than a lot of travellers.
I know the feeling - when I first came to Oz there were soo many different emotions and the fear really just before going! It's so easy to meet people though. I wouldn't waste your money on booking a tour personally - just make sure you stay at hostels at the start as it becomes easier to meet lots of people there. I used hostelbookers as you only pay a small percentage and the rest at the hostel.
I had created a group on FB to meet people and have created a new one recently for people to join so backpackers planning to travel or that are in Oz can connect and share inspiration and support etc - that way you can also get advice from current travelers. If you want add me on FB and I'll add you to the group. https://www.facebook.com/skd.abs
@jamesrob - I had a 40yr old backpacker with me so I wouldn't worry about your age! It doesn't matter when you're traveling. :D
I plan on going to Aus end of December so I'm there for New Year! Doing a three month stint of travelling South East Asia beforehand.
I've spoken to quite a few people in regards to the money situation. I've been told a number of different things it all depends how quick you plan on getting in to work? Get yourself a lonely planet guidebook to help with numbers for hostels etc.
I've been told everybody is pretty much in the same boat, most people go alone and you just make friends along the way!
It's nerve wracking but I'm sure it'll be more than worth it when set up!
Im flying out to Bangkok in September and travelling down SE Asia, hoping to be in NZ/Aus maybe jan/feb time
So relieving to see everyones in the same boat about traveling alone and meeting people!
Does anyone have any info about whether its better to work in Aus or NZ? Or are they pretty much the same work wise?
Doing a similar route to me there! From what I've been told it's pretty easy to get work in Aus! What islands you visiting altogether in SEAsia?
