If you were given one night to stay at either place, which would you choose?

Mont St. Michel or St. Malo?

I am coming from Paris and I have one day to spare, which would you recommend for photography and a sense of calm and relaxation?

Thanks in advance for the tips!

Thats a tough choice as both are equally as good !

There is more to do in St Malo as outside the walls you can go around the town as compared to the Mont San Michel which does not have much outside its immediate vicinity so I would be inclined to lean towards St Malo.

I love walking around the Mont San Michel and indeed feel extreme relaxtion there when I am not walking up to the monastary but I just think sense prevailing that you would have more to do in St Malo. My heart says the M san M but my head says St Malo. Make sure you have a wide angle lens to fully appreciate either if photographing.

Very hard to answer this question if you are making a choice between the 2, best bet is to flip a coin, you wont be disappointed with either but visiting the M san M is a more historical experience.

Sorry cant be more help

I have never been to Saint Malo, but have travelled to the Mont Saint Michel area, which I found truly magic.
The area around the bay is worth visiting if you are a nature lover. There is a whole network of paths (sentiers douaniers) along the coast and the town of Avranches nearby is also nice.

You will need a car if you want to explore different areas around the Baie, though.

Without a car, Saint Malo is probably more accessible... or Honfleur, or Etretat or Houlgate, or...
