I am planing on travelling this summer from Kathmandu to Varanasi.
From what I've read so far it seems the best way to do this is as follows:
- Taxi or Bus Kathmandu to Sunauli, Nepal border crossing
- Shared jeep from Sunauli to Gorakhpur
- Train Gorakhpur to Varanasi
Does anyone have any experience of this and any tips?
Yes, we did exactly that six or seven years ago. The bus leaves from outside a small shopping complex in Thamel around 8am and gets to the border at about 3pm. It's a tourist bus with many locals also going to the border. Once at the border, there's about 1km of "no man's land" between the two immigration posts that you have to walk between. Then we shared a taxi (there's plenty waiting) with another pair of travelers straight to the railway station at Gorakhpur arriving about 5 or 6pm. We had a three hour or so wait at the railway station watching the rats until our train departed. We had already booked a sleeping compartment so we travelled overnight and arrived in Varanasi at around 8am the next morning, after a surprisingly good night's sleep. Things might have changed a bit in the intervening few years but probably not much! Enjoy your travels.
Thanks very much for your reply. I'm sure it's still roughly the same. Good to know.
I also planned the same.... I will travell next month with my friends.
There is a direct bus from Kathmandu to Varanasi. It's operated by Indian Goverment and called Uttar Pradesh State Road Transport something..... You don't have to change your bus at the border, get off, find another bus or so on. One bus, directly to Varanasi. We left Kathmandu around 3 pm and arrived Varanasi around 4 am. Everything was well easy. Bus waits for everyone at the border, you get your stamp, change your money and jump on the same bus again. It's so easy and safe because it's a goverment bus. I did this in April 2015.
Just make sure you get your ticket for the right bus. EVeryone in KAthmandu says buses go to Varanasi and you don' need to change at the border which is not true. Ask for "Uttar Pradesh State Road Transport".
Thank you so much for all this information! That's great
