And I quote from the Rough Guide Special - First-Time Latin America on
Page 270. "Bizarrely, Avon's Skin-So-Soft moisturizing lotion, available from drugstores in North America (and parts of Latin America), is one of the best repellents of both mosquitoes and sandflies". Wow, is this true, theirin lies the possibility to be soft and not so sensitive. If this is true?, if so I'm getting some when I go to New York next week.

I have heard, in fact, that Avon sells Skin So Soft more as a mosquito repellent than as a skin moisturizer.

Very interesting. Its insect repellent properties have been spread by word of mouth. Avon has never marketed it as bug-repellent.

Yes, it seems that Skin So Soft does work as a repellent for some people, but not all. Keep in mind, that while traveling in Latin America (or anywhere where mosquitoes and malaria are prevalent), Skin So Soft will not protect you as well as a formulation containing DEET. It may smell better than real repellents, but if you are not planning to use anti-malarial meds (such as Chloroquine or Malarone) also, then I would opt for the DEET repellents and forgo the soft skin and pleasant smell for proven protection.

Ok, here I come as a volunteer for Avon Skin So Soft...I leave for SE Asia tomorrow (finally!!!) and I got Avon Skin So Soft. A friend of mine who travelled to Belize (infested with mosquitoes) swears by it, she said she didnt get bit once. But mind you, this is a deet free product.

I will be an excellent candidate to test this Avon stuff because I am one of those people that get bit in a matter of seconds. I am also bringing deet (100% deet) spray. The Avon Skin So Soft also comes as SPF 15 and 30 so I will be applying that first and then spraying some deet on top of it. But I will test it without the deet first.

I will be the guinney pig again :) . I already posted my "results" of the Lariam pill on the Africa forum. Yikes!
