Buying a vehicle in Central America

Travel Forums Central/South America & The Caribbean Buying a vehicle in Central America

Me and my husband are currently in Mexico at the start of our trip through central and South America. We are considering buying a car or van/mobile home to take us on the journey. Does anyone have any experience of buying a vehicle in Mexico, and, or travelling through any of these Latin American countries? We are already aware that roads can be tough on a car and it doesn't seem as though there are many camping places. Any information or advice would be appreciated on paperwork, any make of car that's easier to maintain/sell, running costs, crossing borders, safety etc.
We are undecided about whether to go this route or will public transport enable us to see as many things. I know using buses etc means you meet more people which a lot of the time is what the journey is about. Help!

beware of cars from the recent baton rouge flooding, I expect they will find their way down there too.
