What's the best thing anyone has managed to get for free whilst travelling?
My dad got free accomodation a few times in Brazil by staying in police cells. And his friend "hitched" on a ship from Rio De Janeiro to Spain. Admittedly, both examples were quite a while ago but is this kind of thing still possible?
We got free dinner in Brussels once.
My boyfriend at the time called a sales manager he worked with, who was in Brussels to meet with clients on the day we were there. So the clients (young, cute, hip guys - bonus!) took us out for dinner on that street whose name I forget - the narrow one with all the restaurants and the tables outside.
We ate like pigs - I couldn't move! Wine and entrees muscles and salad and fries and creme brulee and Napoleon Mandarine. Oof! I waddled back to the hotel. It must have cost a fortune, and we were running out of vacation money at the end of our trip. So, it was very good and much appreciated!
My sister and I also got free dinner at the Radisson in West Palm Beach because the prom-fest (it was graduation time) kept us up all night. The kids ran amuk in the hallways and knocked on everyone's doors and screamed from every direction.
In the morning, we went to the front desk to ask if the teenagers would be gone the next night, and we were informed that not only did the police come to kick the teenagers out, the hotel was also compensating us with 2 free supper vouchers.

both examples show that the recipient did something in order to get something for free
Those are both anecdotes from the past - stories about what has already happened. Henry asks "what's the best thing anyone's managed to get for free whilst travelling?" He's asking for stories, not advice.
I hitch-hiked 500 miles once...that was free!
Then the taking-the-bump-for-free-rt-airline tickets, that is my favorite, have ended up in some nice hotels for free when they couldn't get me to where I was going too that evening. Don't know if this counts, but my sister has flown me 2200 miles to move her/paint her house/ and fix up a duplex she bought (she just doesn't have the time)4 times over the past 15 months. And walking! You get to see so much more of where you are, and it doesn't cost a thing
Yes, it was anecdotes I was looking for. Just interested after my dad told me stories of his travels.
To sleep the night in police cells he just begged with the policemen, saying that he had been unable to find anywhere else to stay. Sometimes it worked, sometimes not. Also, sometimes the cells were well kept and sometimes they were unbearable.
Don't know how his friend hitched across the atlantic but as far as I know it was just from blagging.
Not sure if its possible to give advice on blagging free stuff. I would have thought that it usually happens by chance, like Tway's free dinners.
I went to a 4 day festival in Copenhagen last year called Roskilde which cost me about $220AUD. A friend of mine, the smart bastard, made up this bull story to the festival organisers that he worked for a music magazine in Australia and was reviewing the festival. They gave him a free 4 day pass.
Not as lucky as some people there though. Some local Danes had these wrist bands on, not sure how they got them, but they were access all areas and gave them free unlimited beer for the whole festival.........i wouldnt have remembered anything if that had been me.
