Ok so.. I have traveled solo around the whole of Australia and New Zealand and felt extremely safe. I'm a currently in Wellington and I have spontaneously decided to go to Thailand at the beginning of September... It's somewhere I've always wanted to go, however I'm a bit nervous to do it solo.
Does anyone know if I should firstly fly into Bangkok? How long do I need there? Then where else is a must do?
I would LOVE to go to a full moon party and just have an amazing time!!
Do I need a visa before I enter the country?
Sorry for all the questions.
Thank you😁 x
You should make Google your friend! A lot of information is available with a forum search too. There are several posts for "solo woman traveler" or words like that so a forum search can be helpful.
If you need a visa or not depends on what passport you use to enter Thailand. See list below:
(Other visa links will show with a search.)
For instance, if you are from the UK or Canada you can enter on a free 30 day Visa Exemption stamp you get at the airport on arrival. Besides having the right passport to qualify for the free Visa Exemption you should have a flight out of Thailand within 30 days. Longer than 30 days or entering on one way ticket you should have a tourist visa you get ahead of time.
How long will you be in Thailand? I think everyone should take some time out for a visit to Bangkok. Like going to France and seeing Paris or visiting England and seeing London. Quite a few Australian tourists fly into Phuket. But Bangkok is more central. (For size comparison, Thailand is bigger than the the UK.)
Many tourists try to round out their visit to Thailand by seeing Bangkok, northern Thailand (usually Chiang Mai area) and a beach area. But all depends on budget and time available. My suggestion is to visit for no less than 2 weeks.
My advice is if you are using a smart phone for research switch to a laptop or tablet and it might be easier to gather information. This forum has a section at the top of the web page that says "Travel Guides" where it has information for Thailand.
There is recent post for Koh Phangan FMP. Google will give you some more info on Full Moon Parties but obviously you have to coordinate with a "full moon" cycle.
Many solo women visit Thailand all the time. You do have to take normal precautions that you would do for any new place you visit. A Google search for scams to avoid can be helpful. When women get in trouble sometimes it is because they get so drunk they take too many chances. Some of the visitors to the FMP get kind of wasted. Some assaults do occur if you get so drunk you can't say no! Most tourists do okay but problems do occur. Sample Google search below:
Thailand does have some good transportation from top to bottom. If you ride a long distance bus keep money, passport and computer with you at your seat and not in the storage bin underneath the seating area. (Google bus scams Thailand.)
