bangkok & hanoi

have had to settle for flying into bangkok rather than directly into hanoi, so was just wondering if whats the best way of doing it? fly, bus or train.

also anybody know of any really good hostels in bangkok

Sorry, actually I misread the question. I think taking a bus will be tough. It is a long ride (and dreadful for what I hear) but if I were you, I would use that as an opportunity to see Cambodia, at least go to Angkor Wat (Siem Reap) like massageuk said. Then you can fly from Siemp Reap to Hanoi.

I dont think there is a train that crosses all three countries. But if you are pressed for time then just take a flight out of BKK to Hanoi.

If you are going late May or June, I may be able to give you better advice as I will be coming back from Asia by May 16th.

BTW, if you are on a budget, go to Khao San Road for guesthouses. You will find everything you need there, it is the backpacker's hub in BKK. Good luck!
