Seen as i ahve now booked my tickects I am attempting to sort out my visas and was hoping to pick your well travelled brains about them as i have so far had some conflicting advice / information

the following is where i plan to go and in which order:

Thailand - 2 weeks ish :)
Laos - 2 weeks ish
Vietnam - 3 -4 weeks
Cambodia - 3 -4 weeks
Thailand - 1 - 2 months

So can you correct me if i am wrong on the following:

Thailand - i should be ok on the free visa, for the amount of time i will be spending to start with. but what about the 1-2 months at the end

Laos - NO IDEA !

Vietnam - needs to be sorted out before i leave the uk, with set dates of entry and exit

Cambodia - needs to be sorted out before i leave the uk, with set dates of entry and exit

Last question i promise - does it matter that i am flying in and out of thailand, in terms of sorting out visas.

cheers

You can apply for a longer Thai visa from the embassy before leaving I am pretty sure.... and I wouldn't think it matters visa wise with regards to your last question.

I am not really familiar with the other countries though so am afraid I can't be much help there!

Loas: You can get the Visa on arrival. At least I know you can get one on arrival at Vientiane airport (not sure about the various land borders).

You'll be granted a free 30 day visa on each arrival in Thailand. Doesn't matter whether or not you fly. You can extend for another 30 days if so desired.

Laos, Vietnam & Cambodia visas can be easily arranged in Thailand.

If you fly into Cambodia you can get visas issued at the airports in Phnom Penh and Siem Reap. It might be easier to organise your visas in Thailand for Laos/Vietnam then you are a bit more flexible with your travel date, unless you know when you're hitting each country already, then it would be easier to sort them out before you go.

Visa prices should be the same wherever you get them. however, if arranged through a travel agent, there'll probably be a small commission added on for their service.

Thailand Visas are available free on arrival. Visas for Laos can be arranged in Thailand or they are available at the border. If you arrange a visa for laos in advance you will get a 30 day visa, however on the border they only issue 15 day visas, but these can be extended for $2 a day.

I arranged my Cambodian visa in Vientiane in Laos, however these are easily arranged via travel agents all over Laos and Thailand.

I then arranged my Vietnam Visa via an agent in Cambodia. The price of Visas went up on the first of April, and then a week later the Vietnamese embassy reduced the length of Visas issued. Previously they issued standard 30 day visas, however it's now been reduced to 15 day for the same price, although we were told this would probably change soon. (We were somehow given 2 month visas - an administrative error i think!)

If you have the time the it may well be worth arranging your visas before you leave the UK.

Oh, and one last thing: Visas for Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam do not have set entry or exit dates (none of mine did anyway), but they do have a validity date, after which the visa is void. It makes no difference that you're flying in and out of Thailand as far as Visas are concerned.

Hope this helps
