I had a horrible one that actually reduced me to tears!!!!Stayed in this god auful cesspit in Venice, California a few months back and it was one of the worst expereinces of my life!!!!Turned up, it look pretty cool, paid my money only to be told I wouldnt be staying there but at the annex down the road.....arrived at this place above an estate agent and couldnt beleive my eyes!!!Was shownt to my room which had a skany matress on the floor, there was mice droppings and a lone cockroach. I was sharing with 5 middle aged men, who were consequently drunk and appeared to be long term residents rather than fellow travellers!!!!The place was covered in old food, pizza boxes, dirty clothes, a few broken bikes!!!and this place didnt come cheap!!!luckily some friends of a friend came to my rescue and took me to their gorgeous apartment, over looking the beach which was fantastic!!!!

I stayed at a hostel in Nice that was terrible. It was a flat the guy had converted into a hostel of sorts.. It had about 5 6-8 person rooms and 2 toilets. Our room must have been a children's bedroom or something because it had a Mickey Mouse floor and some other mouse wallpaper. In the room there was a closet with clothes in, that nobody in the room owned and nobody ever came to claim them. We had a shower with no shower curtain and a sink in our room and there was a door into the room where the owner lived that didn't shut all the way. We had a TINY balcony that had a rusted excercise bike on it.
To get out of our room we had to almost climb over furniture that seemed to be everywhere!

thats what I hate about some hostels, not saying Im a "towel-clutcher" as my mate likes to call them but theres something not so pleasant about waking up copping an eyefull of some strangers "morning glory" whilst you try to drag yourself out of bed!!!!You would at least sleep with some shorts on surely!!!!I always take pajamas!!!

yup depends on who that stranger is of course but middle aged danish construction workers are at the bottom of my list.......like last.

twinkle don't dispair. i once went to a youth hostel outside Paris it was out of a hitchcock film the matresses were full of 10 yrs woth of dust NO door! and you could see the stars . Half the roof was missing . we didn't stay we had a lovely time sleeping in a PARK.
even so i wouldn't recomend it.
