What's 'featuring photos' and what it serves I do not know, if anyone wants to feature anything unusual, anyone may ask.
I mostly visit places 'off the beaten path', and I make photos there, too.

Question to Peter: Is it in accordance with this site's rules to use photos from another website if you provide the source, or not?

To me it does not seem okay. In my country the legislation concerning copyright issues has become extremely strict and doing this could well cause expensive trouble.

I agree we have to be extremely careful about this. I would always look to the source for guidance - if a photo is clearly marked as being copyright-free or that non-commercial use is permitted if credited, for instance, then I would feel able to make use of it if I wanted to, but not otherwise. Perhaps though in most circumstances it would be better to provide a hyperlink within our blogs to a photo elsewhere that illustrates our point, rather than downloading it from another site and uploading here.

As stated before, you are most welcome to delete all my 1000+ photos altogether, and blogs, too - it's too much headache to upload them anyway

EUTravelGuide, the photos are fine. There's no problem watermarking your photos. We have featured photo galleries (click on Community in header, then Photography to see them). Watermarked photos like that wouldn't be featured, but if you don't care about it, then it just doesn't matter.

Question to Peter: Is it in accordance with this site's rules to use photos from another website if you provide the source, or not?

No, it's definitely not OK to upload content you don't have the copyright for. The problem with this is that it's often very hard to tell. Firstly, how do we know the person doesn't have permission from the original source. Secondly, finding out the copyright status of a photo is very difficult - it could be in public domain. Because of this, we don't generally delete photos just because we assume they are copied without permission. But if someone comes to us and complains that there are copied photos of theirs, then we absolutely do remove them!

To add regarding featured photos, read this article:

Featured Photos: what is it all about

The cover photo in the guide articles is usually also a featured photo. Unless there really is no featured photo.

Some unfeatured photos are ok sometimes in the guide articles, but we prefer to have featured photos only. Thanks.

HI I've just heard about this site and jumped over from VT. I heard there is a way to transfer your photos (and also save tips etc) from VT but not sure how to do this? Sorry if this has been gone over earlier in this thread - its very long!

Welcome to the site! I'll send you a PM with instructions. :)

The script for moving your blog here isn't finished yet. Peter wrote here that he hopes that part will be done "quite soon". As long as you created a backup using travelark.org, everything should be safe, and you can migrate your blog here once Peter's work is done.

thanks Sander. It was lucky people were watching or we all would have lost a lot of stuff. So a big thanks to those who kept up.
