My Dell 17" LCD at home is set to 1280 x 1024, while my work laptop is set to the standard 1024 x 768.

I have dual 19" monitors on my Mac - both are set to 1280 x 1024.

My laptop is 1280 x 800.

About the websites having horizontal scroll bars - I think more and more websites are being designed for resolutions of 1024 x 768 and higher. I'm a web designer and we decided to design for higher resolutions about 9 months ago. After looking at the web site statistics of our clients we determined that there were only about 10% of users using 800 x 600 or lower (480 x 600!!! ).

The better sites are those that use extended tables - areas of the page that expand to the full size of your browser window no matter what resolution you are running (well... usually a minimum res of 800 x 600 is required). TP is one of those.

My dad was still on 800 x 600 because he's so blind - even with his glasses on! I gave him a 19" monitor so he can read text at 1024 x 768. There's no way we can go higher than that with him... there is no way he'll be able to read things. Unless we get a bigger monitor of course.

True, but I tend to not assume that people will actually want to have their browser window maximised. There's no real statistic to prove that either way. Not to mention that there is also a trend to have smaller and smaller screens serving web content (ie phones and pda's). The very best is to make the site standards compliant so it will work on a phone (TP isn't quite there yet ;))

Why doesn't he just zoom in on the text? Go Firefox :) !

I agree with you!

But then again, not every web site will be best viewed on a phone, pda or small screen device.

Ah well... I'm officially a "traveller" in 3 weeks and 3 days (putting my web developer hat on the shelf for a few years) so I'm going to leave this thread alone. hehe

Err no, not really. The only shares I have are in this website :)

Well, actually, come to think of it, I do have some shares in Firefox. See here
