I don't have a favorite. I like them all. But I frequently travel to Austria to visit a family that I have known for more than four decades, ever since they opened their home to me as a young traveler making his way around the world. I'll be there again in April.

What else to say... Instead of some recommendations I have read, I would try to visit fewer places and enjoy them better. I think that a nice European trip must include Barcelona, Paris, Berlin and Rome, but you should consider focusing on some alternatives. For instance, nothern countries such as Sweden Finland or Denmark are really beautiful. Or maybe going to Ireland instead of London, which in my opinion is quite overrated.

One personal recommendation, if you want to include Spain, is the northeast area, called the Costa Brava. There is a lot of fanstastic towns and beautiful beaches, perfect for a road trip. In fact I have found this in case you search for a place to stay: -snip-

Anyway, enjoy your trip and remember that sometimes less is better.

I would go for the south and Meditterrenean. Because there are amazing places to see such as Spain, Portugal, Malta, Italy. And it is a lot cheaper than other countries in Europe.

Last summer my friends and I RV'd through Eastern Europe and it was fantastic! One of the cheapest ways to get across country is by overnight train or Bla Bla Car. We traveled Budapest, Romania and Coastal Bulgaria which can be done inexpensively. Perhaps you should look into take Wizz or Ryan Air into Bulgaria and travelling to Macedonia, Montenegro, Serbia and Kosovo.

I was actually thinking about doing a separate trip/City break in the Meds before my Europe trip, mainly because I'm missing the sun! Of those 4, which one's your favourite, & why?

Well, I would definetely go for Barcelona. It is cheap and there are lots of places to see. People are very friendly. Try to avoid touristic place and mingle with the locals :)

As already discussed here, your budget choices are either east or south. If you like warmer weather, consider visiting Portugal and Spain. I especially like Porto and the Douro Valley. Going east, consider a budget flight to Tallinn or Riga. Consider an itinerary that includes Estonia (maybe a day-trip to Helsinki as well), Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, and Slovakia. Along with the capitals, interesting and even less expensive places to visit include Tartu, Klaipeda and the Curonian Spit, Krakow, and Zakopane in the Tatras mountains of southern Poland.

I think you should choose basically on whether you prefer to enjoy cities or natural/characteristic places. i've never been in eastern europe, except Prague and slovenia, which are both beautiful. I did an interrail from prague, amsterdam, berlin, paris. it is really awesome. also, if you want to travel light, there is this good shipping company,

- snip -

i would also recommend you to choose ireland better than london, and expecially southern europe like italy, portugal, spain greece.
enjoy!
