planning a trip with a friend to Europe in Jan 06'. We wanted to leave around Nov-Dec to have xmas over there but it was cheaper in Jan. So far we have a basic outline of where we want to go but as we only really know the main cities, I just wanted to see if anyone could recommend some smaller cities or towns to see.
Here is our trip so far:
Sydney-Bangkok(stopover)-Rome-Cinque Terre-Milan-Venice-Sicily-Amalfi Coast-Naples-Rome-London-(3week contiki tour)-Belgium(visit friend)-Rome(meet up with school group tour for 2 weeks)-Greece/Islands-Turkey(Anzac Day ceremony)-from here on if we have any money left(fingers crossed), we will most likely go see places not covered in Contiki tour or go back to places we want to see more of but that is our itinerary so far.....if there are any places u would recommend seeing(especially in Italy) then send me a msg or post it on here.
In Greece, besides the so called "classical" tour visiting the ancient sites in Southern Greece, I would recommend going to Meteora (in central greece). Most people who visit Greece seem to skip this or not know about it. It's an awesome place. Just google it and check it out. Greek Islands, I'd try and get to Crete and Santorini.
In Turkey, the Fairy Chimneys at Cappadocia and also Ephesus.
In Italy, not far from naples make sure you visit Pompeii. And also Florence. Maybe you were already planning on visiting these 2 places and just didn't list them, but I would NOT miss either. I also liked Verona (it's not too far from Venice if I recall) where the ral life Romeo & Juliet are from.
One more: While you are in Belgium, take a side trip to visit Amsterdam ! depending on where you are in Belgium, it's not far and the trains are very efficient.
hey thanks for the tips!! I didn't mention it in my thread but I have already been to Rome, Naples, Pompeii, Florence, Venice, Verona and all the main cities and attractions but if I hadn't already been there they would've been top of the list!!
Meteora looks great and so do the islands you mentioned!!
