Some websites that allow posting of photos, also give stats of number of views & the ability to 'like' a photo.

E.G .. Google plus has the + one feature with the name of the person who 'plus oned' the photo .. I like that because one can see who is taking an interest in something & reciprocate.

I suggest TP incorporate something similar .. maybe with a rating of some kind .. the rating or likes could be used to 'Feature' photos .. maybe, most likes per day or week or month, get featured. It is open to abuse or cheating but if it were limited to unique members only it might work.

It might encourage engagement & remove the need for a moderator to manually feature photos . .

Perhaps there could be a TP competition for some suggestions of an indicator of likes instead of 'likes' or +1 or thumbs up, I suggest a star rating or Emoticon ( but no unsmiley faces, please)

Steve

I think you're right Steve. We have the FB "like" button there for photos, but there's no way for me to tap into that and notify people of new likes or build lists of the most popular ones, etc. based on that.

I'm inclined towards a heart. A rating is too cumbersome for a photo I think, but just clicking on a heart to show some love is easy.

Sorry, but please no...

Do we have to do everything that Facebook does?

If you introduce ratings then the competition starts. And the cheating. Feeling obligated to click for friends even if they post the worst crap. And the grief if someone cannot bear having less that someone else - I am speaking from sad personal experience over on VT. Some people would take this ratings business far too seriously. Not wanting to go into details.

A heart? Isn't that too kitschy? In my culture "love" is a big word and not used as inflationary as it is in English.

Personally I like the idea. I can see Katherin's point that it's open to abuse - you would need to build something in to stop someone clicking multiple times, for instance. But it's good to get feedback and as you say would facilitate the featuring process. It may just be me, but I never feel obliged to 'like' on Facebook every photo a friend takes - I take my photography seriously (perhaps too seriously!) and only praise photos I recognise as good - well-composed and/or interesting in some way.

not on facebook, but the ability to signal favour perhaps with a star system as on globosapiens would be really good, but hardly replace independent monitors.

as for ratings, been there and done that - no deja vu all over again for me

I still think independent featuring is the best, but a simple counter that helps narrow down the options maybe is quite useful. I understand your point of view to Kathrin and this is really the reason that it hasn't happened already. But I feel there is a need to provide more interaction and a simple click to show appreciation for something is the easiest possible way to do this. I don't want to allow negative reviews of content. No-one's on a site like this to be judged (at least I don't think so). But a bit of positive feedback is I think something most people like and it's a good way of letting people know that their contributions are appreciated.

The heart icon is a bit kitschy for sure. Of all the ones I've seen though, it's the one that *feels* the nicest to me. And I noticed on Instagram where it's used heavily it really does convey a very positive vibe which is one of the main purposes of doing this kind of thing.

How about I make a poll and the community can decide which icon is the right one for us?

When I'm reading the forums I often wish for a "like" button. I may have nothing to add in a follow up, but a Like would be a bit of participation, and show the poster some encouragement.

Probably a good idea, then you can judge the general consensus of peoples opinion. Personally i'd quite like "heart" or another vessel for showing appreciation.

Funnily enough i was thinking this at the beginning of the week. I Absolutely agree with Andyf on this.
