When i was a little girl we used to spend our holidays at the seaside. We always went there by train, about 600 km from my hometown, which I loved. I could sit for hours and just look through the window at the changing scenery. It's strange, but what I remember more are those moments spent on the train rather than the destination itself. My first foreign travel was to Cottbus when I was nine years old, and although it was just a one-day trip, I felt like a real traveller. For long years countries outside the Eastern block seemed an unattainable dream. It did come true for me in 1979 when I visited the UK. I had to buy the currency on a black market, because officially we could exchange only one hundred dollars. We hitchhiked in England, Scotland and France, slept on campsites, couldn't afford to go to any bar or restaurant, but had a wonderful time.

Marg... That is so nice to hear :) what wonderful memories. It's refreshing to hear that on a tight budget you experienced things that some still dont.
Keep travelling mate. Awesome :)

My first travel memory was also my very first memory.
We were visiting family in Lyme Regis and - as is always the case with childhood holiday memories - it was a beautiful, sunny day. I distinctly remember the dappled light as we walked along winding lanes lined with fern covered stone walls that soared way above my three year old head - a world away from the commuter town where we lived.
I was given sixpence by my aunt's mother (who I adored even before then) to spend at the local sweet shop, and insisted on buying a dayglo pink fondant prawn for everyone which I proudly placed on each sideplate at the supper table.
I still love Lyme to this day.

My earliest travel experience was very unlucky :( One summer (when I was 3 years old) my grandparents told me that they are going to have a trip to the sea. I packed my small suitcase where I put my squirrel toy and my favorite dress. It was everything I need at that time BUT some days later adults changed their plans and our trip was cancelled I was very offended!

How devastating, LindaGGG. All these years later, I can still feel the disappointment that the little girl felt.
I hope that you have made up for it since :)

Oh, thank you for your empathy :) Of course, I made up for it. Since that incident I have visited about 20 countries, 5 seas and 2 oceans :) I am happy and not about to stop!

You should make some TP maps - - they will give you some stats of the countries you have visited ( & a nice world map ), but not, unfortunately seas or oceans.

Earliest travel memory: My family took me to Turkey, when i was 4. We lived in a cottage near the beach on the territory of a hotel. One day I woke up and found no one in the cottage. Being a lil kid, i started running all around the house, looking for my parents, crying. Finally, they came and calmed me down. Turned out they'd gone swimming in the sea early in the morning, hoping i'd be sleeping. Heheh. Was a nice trip anyway!
