I preview my blog before publishing and are happy with the layout, then when I publish, it is completely different and not how I like it.
Is there any way to make it come out the same way as the preview blog?

Have you tried some of the different templates? That can make a big difference. If you don't like one, just switch to another. It won't hurt your original formatting. Just a thought . . . :)

I have also observed that the preview is always wider, thus puts more text into each line so the layout is different from the outcome after publishing.

I do not use the preview function any more but simply publish the first attempt immediately, then have a closer look at it, and edit what must be edited, usually 3 or 4 times in a row.

I've had the same experience. I do use the function but only to give a rough idea, knowing that the final version will be narrower ad the photos smaller. The more entries I write, the better I'm getting at guessing what will look good and what not, but I still usually have to edit at least once, and usually a couple of times.
