Well, I hope this is an improvement. The Groups feature of the site has not had much love in the last couple of years, so it was about time to give it a boost.

I've just finished off my initial work on that and have uploaded the changes (warts and all no doubt). Here's what's changed.

  • You can now create your own groups. No need to suggest and wait for it to be approved or anything like that. I have restricted this to Supporting Members though to avoid abuse.
  • As the group creator you also become the person who looks after it - that means keeping people happy, removing posts that are inappropriate, etc.
  • I've ditched the whole linking groups to forum threads thing. It was clunky and just didn't really give much value.
  • Instead you can post directly to your group. The post stays within your group and is not shown in the forums. Group members will receive a notification via our new notification system (yay for that!). You can use the same type of code used in blog posts, but I haven't added the toolbar to make it easy. So it's a bit of a powerfeature for those who have memorized how to bold text, etc.
  • People can comment on group posts. And again, those who previously commented on that post will also get a notification.

No starring in there just yet. I was just keen to get it up and in use, so I didn't want to wait any longer.

And for those who just happen to be from Melbourne, come join my shiny new Travellers from Melbourne group.

Looks good to me.

How is that going to work for the groups that existed before "Melbourne" & the new procedures?

I will be the moderator for those. Though if someone is keen, I'm happy to hand over ownership - just a change in one field achieves that.

I also cleared out all the suggested groups that were in limbo.

I joined a group (photographers) and tried to make a post and add a photo. The photo is there but not attached to the post and I can't delete it or figure out how to add it to the post.

And below 'Members from Melbourne' is 'Members from New Zealand' - all Kiwis welcome!:)

Quoting greatgrandmaR

I haven't really touched how the photo adding was handled. It is indeed missing a delete option and it does not link to the "writing something" type of posts. I recognize it's pretty confusing and probably needs to be merged into one post type that can handle both.

There is spam in the ancient groups but no way to report it .. is that coming?

Is there any reason to keep the groups that refer to years long past? Is anyone likely to be interested in 'Sydney Christmas and New Years 2012' anymore?

Can the groups be sorted so that the ones that no longer have relevance be at the bottom, or be deleted.

Main reason is just because they are referenced elsewhere. Hopefully if we create a bunch of new ones, they will quickly fall to the back. Retiring them in some way (closing to new members at least) would also be good.

I guess the only report option is to report the member, but even then it currently doesn't remove their group posts when banning them. I've just joined all those groups so I can get a notification when someone posts. As I'm the only real moderator for them, that seems the least I could do.

Incidentally, these groups might be a nice way of bringing back the Book Club. They should provide a good area to post stuff like that.
