Hey Mim,

I'm pretty sure iPhoto shold do the trick. I can't open it right now (would have to have it connected to my external hard drive - long story), but I think the 'email' command will let you do this quite easily. Of course, it's a bit of a pain to have to go about it that way. I'm not sure if you can just do an 'export' or something similar. I use Photoshop Elements myself (a much cheaper, but more than capable version)

But, there are other options.

Firstly, depending on which computer you bought, you may have received Graphic Converter as extra free software. I did and it's fantastic for resizing pictures or reformatting into just about any file format you like. Not quite as easy to use as photoshop though.

Secondly, you should have a program in your Applications > Utilities folder called ColorSync (not sure what version of OSX it was introduced). You can do some pretty clever converting in there as well. If you have it and can't quite figure out how to make it work, let me know and I'll explain in more detail.

Thirdly, Preview can be used to compress JPEGs as well, although I can't find an easy way to resize them in there.

Finally, you can have a look at Versiontracker. It's the best place I know to have a look for free software available for the Mac (and there is LOTS there). You may be able to find something there.. at least cheap if not free.

Speaking of Versiontracker, I just downloaded a nice piece of freeware from there that does a beautiful job of this - PhotoToolCM. It's a context menu plugin, so you just control click on the jpeg(s) you want to convert and choose to resize it. It's fast and does a fine job of it.

o.k. peter, I was kind of hoping you wouldn't see this thread cos I know I've asked you this question a billion times but of course now I'm very grateful!!!!, so, the graphic converter I know about, but didn't know it could do this, started re-sizing, the image is now the right pixel hight and width but the file is still about 100% too big will it compress it too?

what next?
Thanks so much for the help!!

Yep, you can do that in Graphic Convertor. That's perfect for the job. This is what I would do

  • Under the File Menu, select > Convert
  • Click on Batch.
  • Under 'Possible Functions', select Max Size and set the maximum width and height there.. (for TP 450 px, generally a good setting) I can't quite remember what effect the other settings there have - you could play around. You could save this setting if you like.
  • Close that window and select JPEG/JFIF as the Dest. Format
  • Click on Options and tick the 'Resize to reach following size' box and set it to 50 kb or under (I think setting it a bit lower might be a good idea)
  • Finally, select a folder or picture to convert and select a folder to place the converted files in.
  • Hit Convert

It does a pretty good job in my experience. I'd almost say better than Photoshop, just not quite as easy.

However, that other software I mentioned 'PhotoToolCM' seems to me a lot easier actually. You just ctrl-click (or right-click if you have the right type of mouse) and convert a selection of pictures in one hit! Graphic Converter is a LOT more powerful though, with literally thousands of options. Thousands of options also means plenty of room to confuse you.

Btw, I didn't realise you had asked this question before Mim. I don't think I've every really explained how to do this on a Mac, so this should be useful for people generally anyway. Looking forward to seeing some of those pics

Hmm, you want Travel Guru huh ??? Let me tell you, you're not far off ;)

When you select JPEG/JFIF, there will be an 'Options...' button just underneat the dropdown. Click on that and there are errr, well, options.. including the option to 'Resize to reach following size:'
