Hey everyone!

Coming to Oz in December and looking to do an epic road trip starting Jan 13, 14 or 15 and driving/busing all the way to Sydney and looking to get there for no later than the 30th of January.

I looked at wicked campers and the quote I got was $2245.00

I found that the Australian Hop on Hop off Grey hound does that route for $442.00, but then I would of course need to find accommodations along the way the entire time...

can anyone tell me if there is a hostel list already for this route?

Thanks!! :)

I know this isn't what you're asking, but ... why? That's two weeks, during the worst time of the year to be up north (the middle of the rainy season) to drive ~30 hours. Half a day of driving, every other day. That's pretty brutal - particularly in the weather you can expect during that time of the year - and personally I'd be quite exhausted by it all after the first week. And sitting in a bus for that much time isn't that much better.

How long are you going to be in Australia for? Is there anything specific on the east coast you want to see? Assuming you'll be there on a WHV and will definitely be starting off in Cairns, I'd recommend buying a cheap flight to Melbourne, and making your way from there to Sydney during those two weeks, and then come March or April, take 6-16 weeks to properly travel up the east coast, lingering everywhere you'll like and really getting to know places, see sights and do activities.

Now for your actual question: There's loads and loads of hostels everywhere in Australia, so pick any destination you'd want to stop at for a day, and there'll be one. (The problem on several stretches along the east coast will be finding destinations to stop at - there's just nothing of significance there at all.) Pick up a lonely planet for some recommendations on specifics, take a look at the Australia budget accommodation page here at TP (move the price slider further left to a maximum price of ~$35 to get only hostels, and then zoom in on the east coast), or do searches for any town name you can think of at a site like hostelworld.

Thanks... I'm actually only going for 5 weeks to visit family and I want to specifically see Cairns Airlie Beach, Whitsundays, Fraser Island, Noosa, Brisbane, GoldCoast, Byron Bay, and Sydney. I was told the drive is stunning. Does it really rain all that much during Mid January ??

My family is in Adelaide and Melbourne so I'll already be seeing them and doing that part. And wanted to venture out on my own for the east coast drive

In January yes, December is not as bad but it isn't great either. You also have the threat of cyclones especially around Cairns and the Airlie Beach region, but even sans that the heavy rains means a lot of activities (especially water ones) can be cancelled. Brisbane and Gold Coast is not as bad as further north, you get more sunny days. Personally for the season you are travelling in I would stick to the southern end of the country. Tasmania, Victoria, east coast NSW, south coast South Australia and the souther portion of Western Australia would be perfect for the season. Inland it is dry but can get really hot. Sticking to the coast is generally best for this time of year.

I would be careful with Wicked Campers, they have had some legal troubles for renting out unroadworthy vehicles.

I commend you for wanting to do an east coast drive. It is a great part of the country and there is so much to see. I just wouldn’t go as far north as you are planning. Personally I would rent a vehicle because with a vehicle you can go to all the smaller places and national parks that the bus doesn’t generally stop at.

Man this sucks lol I really wanted to do the entire east coast ( well from Cairns anyway b) but I obviously don't want to be stuck in some hurricane either or whatever you guys call them ha ha so where do you suggest I start my trip then because I do want to see as much of the East Coast as possible, weather permitting, I was also thinking about renting a vehicle and staying in hostels.... do you have a car rental company you recommend for this drive ?

Thanks!!

I'd probably start from Brisbane, though you could push for Fraser Island and the Sunshine coast, but I would keep an eye on weather forcasts, if it looks like it is turning, amend the itinerary. I just noticed how much time you are giving yourself for this trip. Distances in Australia are huge, and the East coast around school holiday time (which is when you are travelling) is quite congested so you may not be travelling as fast as you expect not to mention Australian highways are much smaller and slower than European motorways or American Freeways. What I would do first is make a list of the things you want to see and how much time you will spend in certain places, then you can work how much that leaves you for driving. The east coast has a lot of great places that you need to turn off to see and if you decide to do them that will only take up more time. You don't want to be rushing it and spending all your time on highways only.

In terms of rental companies I'm not sure I can help you there, since I live here I tend to use my own vehicle. I only know about Wicked Campers because they ended up in news for 90% of their fleet failing vehicle inspections. They do have a bit of a rent a wreck reputation and I have heard of customers being left stranded because the vehicle they rented wasn't even registered. Look the business could have improved since then I'm just saying research them thoroughly before commiting. All I can say is whoever you rent with check policies for crossing state lines and whether one way rentals in different states are allowed.

Hi Mandy,

The two major hurricanes that have hit since I have been here are:

26 January 2011 – 3 February 2011- Cyclone Yassi
23 March 2017 – 7 April 2017- Cyclone Debbie

The weather is temperamental that time of year but generally it is sunny all day and then rains for a few hours in the evening. This is my own personal experience anyway.

Rather than getting Greyhound there is a cheaper option with Premier Motor Service. Same route as what Greyhound does, but doesn't have wifi.

I personally would recommend getting a bus and hostels for a number of reasons-
-Driving hungover is horrible
-Campsites aren't as cheap as you think
-Hostels are social and central and get to meet more people
-Can get over night buses to save money on accommodation

I hope this helps and if you have any other questions feel free to contact me.

Darryl

Thanks guys!

I'm doing hostels from Sydney up to Noosa and rented a car for the drive. I would have rather done the greyhound but the schedule does not fit well with my travel routes
