Boyka - welcome to the forum. You might get more useful responses if you state your nationality, some of your interests, your mode and method of travel (fly, train, minivan, hostel, camping, five-star) and what you intend to do in Thailand.

Both Pattaya and Bangkok get many solo travelers. Both cities are easy to do on your own. Depending on how long you have usually you can choose a shared tour from your hotel tour desk or from local travel agencies in person. Choose the tour you are interested in one day and leave following morning. Travel in a van with other tourists.

Being cooped up with other tourists in a van you can't help but find someone to talk to. You meet other tourists in beer bars, pubs, go-go bars. You meet people in restaurants, at your hotel and sometimes even on the plane ride over.

You don't need anyone to hold your hand in Bangkok or Pattaya. If you are looking for someone to share a hotel room that is a personal decision. When I was an unattached young male I would never share a hotel room with a total stranger who was also a male!

Hotel location can help you or hurt you for things to do in your off time. Bangkok is a really big city. I choose hotel locations for things I want to do during my free time in the evening. If you choose a hotel good for walking to temples you will be paying for taxi ride to go out for nightlife and probably shopping. Some parts of Bangkok good for shopping, some good for nightlife, etc. Not all areas have city rail service. (Skytrain, subway and Airport Rail Link.) For Bangkok my favorite area (Sukhumvit Road) Nana-Asoke area for nightlife, restaurants, Skytrain and variety of hotels, etc. Some malls also this area, new Terminal 21 Mall is at Asoke. Specifically for shopping interests perhaps Siam and Pratunam area. Pratunam, my opinion, is kind of dead after 9 pm. Google up Pratunam shopping if interested.

There is a cheap bus ride to Pattaya from the Ekamai bus terminal on Sukhumvit Road. Buses from this bus station leave frequently.

In Pattaya if gay choose Jomtien. Otherwise Pattaya City area. Pattaya Beach Road and Pattaya Sai Song (Second Road) are the two main roads. Choose a hotel close to these two Roads and you have lots of things you can walk to. (Nightlife, malls, restaurants, etc.) City transportation is cheap at 10 baht. Easy to sign onto a shared tour in person through some hotels or local travel agencies same as Bangkok.

August is low season for hotel prices. Not difficult to find a room with A/C and private bathroom from around 600 baht to 900 baht per night.

Make Google your friend and do some research for best area for you in Bangkok. Know how much per night you afford for your hotel room. If you need hotel advice include the price you want to pay per night, use Thai baht.

If you are looking for a roommate to share expenses make that clear up front.
