Yes, buses are cheap, but you can also take the new Air-Train from JFK to Jamaica stop, and board the subway from there for an even cheaper option. $5 for the Air Train, $2 for the subway to Manhattan. Is quite fast too, about 30-45 mins from Manhattan @ rush hour. This is what I usually take in/out of NY-JFK.

Also, my tip 4 u...the Metropolitan and Natural History Museum are a must to visit, but don't listen to the fees posted...if you read the small letters, it is a "suggested" price :)
I usually go (and I go a lot!) and only pay $1 (my college professor used to yell to us to pay in the cents range...)...they get plenty of donations from our taxes, and anywhere else in the country public museums are free!

I paid $45 which included a $10 tip on my July 2002 trip to NY. That was from JFK to Manhattan.

But i do have another question for you guys... How much money should i bring in travellers cheques, i mean percentage wise? Because i was gonna get 50% dollars then the rest travllers cheques. I've never used travellers cheques before so if you could tell me how to use them i'd be very grateful.

A lot of people don't use traveller's cheques, but I'm in the old "better safe than sorry" school of thought. I would bring enough spending money for at least your first day. Factor in transportation, food, extras (museums, shopping, etc). Then get the rest in traveller's cheques. In my most recent vacation (overseas but same thing applies), I brought enough money for my first two days (I stayed a week), and then the rest in TCs and I was fine. Just a tip...try and exchange your TCs in a bank as opposed to a Change place. Change places charge high fees, banks don't.

Cheers,
Katie ;)

Thanks everyone for all your help. I'm sure I'll have more questions closer to the time when I start to panic and realise I've forgotten to do something important so watch this space!

Another tip--there is no tax on clothing purchases in New Jersey, but there's about a 8% tax in New York--so obviously buy in New Jersey unless you can get the equivalent discount in New York.

Enjoy
