I was in a four-bed girls room in a hostel in Antwerp. Most of the time it was just me on my five-night stay, though I had a Japanese roomie for one of those nights. So that night we went to sleep, but after a while we were woken up by some knocking (I think we'd locked the door). So my roomie let the person in and we merely thought it was just another female roomie who'd arrived late. I was disturbed by heavy breathing for the rest of the night.

My Japanese roomie left early next morning, and I woke up to wave her off. It was then that I saw this other person asleep on one of the beds. I thought this new roomie looked kinda big underneath the covers (only shoulders showing), and had pretty messed-up hair. So I thought nothing of it and went to the shower room. When I came back, said new roomie was gone. Turned out later that the new roomie was a GUY and had stumbled into the wrong room. The hostel owner later told me that the guy was so embarrassed to realise his mistake that he left in a real hurry!

I don't know whether to laugh or cry!

haha! I have no idea! I saw one on telly and the long necks totally freaked me out. The thought of meeting one makes me shiver!

Thanks for the advice MiM if i ever do meet one it shall be handy but the thought of me flapping my arms may result in people thinking i'm a bit mad and i get taken away to a hospital!

The flapping part isn't vital, as long as you have a big stick

Quoting brown

what is the weirdest or most unexpecting thing you have seen occur during your travels?;)

Brown, what about you ?

So many unexpected things have happened to me and my family in the Parks in Canada... I think the most unexpected was the time the tent flew off of the station wagon's roof- It was a practically antique (compared to now, and it would never mildew) canvass tent.... So then suddenly someone swerved in front of us, and- whoo! It flew off the roof! And then the absent-minded white car behind us just drove right over it!!! Momentarily, we drove back to it and there was a hole ripped right through the bottom. That happened the first time that we went camping with my parents.

But Gosh, so many other things have happened.. The greatest unexpected thing that once happened to me was travelling to Munich. Actually, it was out of Munich... A man from tennesee appeared out of nowhere to help me get my suitcases out of the locker in the hampt bahnhof where they had been sitting for THREE days! It read 76 hr on the side of it so I plainly assumed that, and it locked them in. He went and got a guard, told him what happened in German, and he went and got a key, unlocked the whole thing 'because you are Canadian' and didn't charge me for it !. I was so overwelmed and flattered. Such a random act of kindess.

Peace,
Steph

When I was traveling around Burma I came upon a site that I found kind of amusing. Along the side of the road there were people selling drinks, food, flowers, offerings, etc.. So we stopped to check out what was going on out here in the middle of nowhere. Our driver had been on this road often and said there was nothing there just last week. Turned out that someone "discovered a stone Buddha that just popped out of the ground." The funny thing was it really just looked like a small rock (and was just a small rock) and had probably been there for a long time.

It had just been "discovered" a couple days ago and already had they built a fence around it, and called in the local monks to check it out. The monks had a little hut built for them to hang out in, there was a gong that people could ring, etc.. The people were lining the raod selling all the stuff the pilgrims would need. It was like a little village was growing around this ROCK. Didn't look a thing like a Buddha to me, and after a couple weeks in Burma I had definietely seen my share of Buddhas. Anyway, the whole scene was quite festive, and at least to me kind of weird (in a good way).

The weirdest thing...things!

In Mexico, in a Mayan ruin site called Palenque, the weirdest thing I saw was the grass in front of this temple kind of floating, looked like it was water, was all swaying and moving, sort of resinating.
I assumes this was the magic mushrooms that I had taken three hours before, in fact it was definately the shrooms. Wonder if any Mayan hundreds of years ago ever saw what I saw? Probably so.
