I have arrived in Arequipa 2 days ago, couldnt wait to do the Colca Canyon, the supposed 2nd deepest canyon in the world.
If you are thinking of coming in the next few days or even couple of weeks STAY AWAY!
There is strikes and HUGE demonstrations at the mo, about land ownership i think. It is not possible to do a tour of any kind, and if you had thought about coming in the next few weeks, write to the foreign office and find out.
Busses are blocked to Cusco too so be careful if you have booked the Inca Trail.
Gutted I am, gutted, well wanted to see the canyon.
That absolutely BITES! Any possibility it will remedy itself anytime soon?
(I will keep my fingers crossed for you)
considering that yesterday there was about 1000 people demostrating, riot police out, all the taxis in the whole city blocked all the roads in a HUGE convoy, at least another thousand taxis, unfortuantely i will be departing on Sat night, other things call, (Huacachina and sand borading!)
Hmm, a friend of mine is down there right now with her mother. Wonder how they are getting on. Their plan was to fly into Quito, Ecuador and then to the Gallapagos (just when the strikes and demonstrations were happening in Quito) - spend a couple weeks in Gallapagos and then head down to Peru for Inca trail and Machu Pichu - which should be right about now. Sounds like she should be having quite a time managing her way around!
Anyways, Tarik, glad to read in your other thread at least the rest of your trip is going well!
