I never even heard of a "Gap Year" before I started reading this forum. It seems like everyone is on a "Gap Year." Seems like a great idea to me. How come we don't get 'em over here?

I hadn't heard of them before either. I think it's a European thing... unless I'm just ignorant.

It's a British thing. Americans and anyone else can have them if they like.

They're a great idea. Gives a youth a chance to get out and see the world before settling in for serious university study.

And there's "career gap" which i believe many here are familiar with....

Ok...I'll ask.......WHAT are Gap Years??
(never heard the term before, then again, I've lead a very sheltered life;))

A "gap year" is just a term for a year between school ("High school") and university, you can take as many as you like but most people just take one so I guess it's become like "thing", you can do anything you like in the year, just work, just bum about, or travel ;)

I took two "gap years" which is considered in many cultures a bit "greedy"

Good god! Why didn't anyone tell me?? That would have been a great idea!
I should have let my son do that...but my rule was...once you graduate high either get a job (because you will not live here for free ie:lay on the couch-watching tv-while clearing out the fridge) or you can keep the free room and board IF your going to college.
Who pays for everything during a Gap Year? Do you have to save while in high school?

Since we just found out about it, who thinks we should take our "missed" gap year NOW???

I've taken plenty of them over the years

A gap year is not only the gap between school and uni, it is also possible to do it after university like I have done, before I go and get a serious job and a career.
Personally I am taking 2 years off before I go to get a job, I am only 22 so as i am gonna work till i am 65 why not take off one more!

It is quite often the norm though to take a year off before uni or after, and almost an expected thing.}
This trip has definately opened my eyes to a lot of things and i think has made me grow up more i reckon.
Jeez louise, you americans need to start, i am having so much fun!
