just a quick one...am planning to do a rtw trip on my own-going to thailand, usa west coast, morocco, japan, mexico and india which will last for 6-7months-havent got the order sorted as of yet. Any ideas of hassles of travelling alone in these countries as a female. Plus i also have pink/multi coloured hair and was wondering if this would be too conspicious-i have enough suprised responses just in london!

thanks!!

Hi Grace,

I'm 26 and planning to travel solo as well. Ive been trying to talk to as many ppl as possible who've been to the countries Im going to in order to get a feel for what to expect.

Thailand and Japan are very used to Westerners so I'd imagine the only countries where you might experience any real "attention" would be Morocco and India (maybe parts of Mexico). From what I can gather Western women get stared at a lot in India, but for the most part it doesnt seem to be anything worse than that (maybe the odd grope). There are one or two females on TP who've done the India thing (Mim is a good person to talk to) and they havent had any real trouble.

Dont know about Morocco. A girl my brother knows found it easy enough to join up with other travellers in Spain before going to Morocco. Might be a good idea. My Dad has been to Morocco, and in his words "It's no place for a girl on her own" but that's Dad - he thinks I'm nuts for going anywhere on my own in the first place.

Ive travelled around some of the US west coast and its just as safe/unsafe as home really. You should find it easy enough travelling solo there.

Anyway, hope that helps a bit.

E;)

hi samasara-

thanks for the reply-except im from the uk and so in that respect am western but i'm chinese so that complicates it a bit more-hmmm chinese girl with pink hair?!! strange huh?! so it's no as straight forward as being a westerner per se in the eyes of foreigners. anyone got any words of wisdom on this one?

where are you travelling samsara btw?

Hi Grace,

You think I'd have copped that from your name wouldnt you?

Well, maybe if you're used to getting stared at because of your hair at home then it wont be such a big thing for you when you go away.

I'm going around the world for between 1-2 yrs, so there are a lot of countries I'm hoping to get to..I'll spare you the long list...Spain is first, then India onto Nepal/Tibet (if posible) China, as much of SE Asia as I can, Oz & NZ, a few countries in South AMerica....etc....

So, obviously, there's a few places in there where I'm a bit worried about the whole travelling solo thing. It should be fine though. I think I will prob find India quite a shock at first and I'm preparing myself for feelings of insecurity and loneliness, but once I get past the first week I expect it should improve a lot and I will gain confidence pretty quickly.

When are you leaving?

ha ha funny story!

haven't even booked the tickets yet am a long way off as ive got a few grand to save!! just trying to work out the logistics of it all!

you know strangely enough i found that when i was in barcelona the men were really rude and leary!! so maybe we dont have to worry about other countries its just as bad everywhere!! plus i went to hong kong for a month a few years ago and despite looking like a native cuz of my chinese roots they found me very interesting (had been forced to dye the hair brown at that stage by family so wasnt the hair either) but it took me a while to work out that exposed bra straps under a vest top a few yrs a go was not the done thing!! bizarre!!

so i guess its all strange and needs some getting used to...part of the fun maybe!!

see ya round the forum!
