Hi

I have decided to travel through Thailand, Laos and Cambodia this summer from June to beginning September. I have however discovered this is the rainy season. Oh heck!

Could anyone please advise me on...
- just HOW rainy it gets during these months?
- the best areas to visit to avoid the worst of the rain?
- whether it really matters that it is the rainy season or not?

Thanks

Amy

I wouldn't worry too much about the wet season. I was there in 2001, and heading back in 7 weeks (but who's counting?), and we didn't see much rain. In the north it rained only as we hiked through the hill country. The moment we took our packs off the sun came out. Hmm, very odd. It might rain for an hour or two in the afternoon but will clear right up again. The summer rains there are nothing like the monsoons in say, Calcutta.

The body is waterproof. You'll only get wet on the outside layer of skin

I agree, although even monsoons in Calcutta aint that bad!!

I was also in this area at this time a couple of years ago and it rained infrequently

Hi Amywells...I am in Vietnam right now (after going thru Thailand and Cambodia) and even though raining season is about to start, I cant begin to tell you how happy I was to see rain (the two times that we got it). It rains, I mean it pours but it doenst last long...30 minutes, one hour...unless there is a rainstorm going thru but I wouldnt be worried about it. It beats walking on the sun with averages temperatures of 98 degrees F... (as it was today, yikes!)

glad to hear positive replies about weather in vietnam as plan to head there myself this june! am just tryin to settle accommodation at the moment. wld like to settle for a decent ho(s)tel in both hanoi and ho chi minh for less than USD10 per person per night. wonder if anybody has recommendations and/or comments rgd (i) manh dung guesthouse (2 tam thuong) (ii) north 1 and 2 in Hanoi
this is my first trip to vietnam = )my other main concern is the location of these hostels, and just to make sure that they arent' in deserted alleyways which makes it difficult to move out for a tour of the city and back.
any advice is much appreciated
thks! = )
