Hi

Im going backpacking for a month at the end of Aug with 2 friends, starting in Nice then travelling through italy to greece. Is there anywhere amazing that we shouldn't miss? Also, which greek islands are the best? We were thinking of Mykinos, Santorini, Naxos and Milos. Any hostel/cheap hotel recomendations would be great! Thanks

sarahstr,

I haven't spent much time in France, so I wouldn't be able to help you out there, but in Italy, there is plenty to do. Are you planning on visiting the northern/southern part of Italy?

And you'll most likely depart from Brindisi, Italy to Patras, Greece. (Bear in mind the ferry rides can be quite long)

The only islands I went to were Ios and Corfu. Both are party islands and were a blast! In Ios, I stayed at the Far Out Village Hotel. I had a private bathroom and room for an unbelievable 20 Euros, but unfortunately I'm not sure what the price is now.

You could visit the island of Corfu and stay at the Pink Palace, it wasn't too expensive either. It's said to be the Cancun of Greece ;)

Any more questions, feel free to ask. :)

Hi Sarah,

My favorite islands are Crete and Santorini. Crete has some impressive archeological sites.

In Greece, I would try and visit Meteora (it's in central Greece). Most people do the so called "classical" touring around Southern Greece and don't even seem to know of Meteora, but Meteora is Amazing! Just google Meteora and check out some of the pictures and Infomation on it.

If you leave from Italy the ferry from Ancona, Brindisi or Bari are overnight. Bear in mind that most of the best parts of Italy are on the opposite side (Florence, Rome and Naples).

There are many islands to choose from in Greece. The Cycades such as Ios, Santorini, Paros and Naxos are excellent (each with their own distinct character). I would also recommend Amorgos (via Naxos), its a little off the beaten track but has an excellent vibe (particualry the North)and isn't too well known by non Greeks.

On the main islands, there is no need to pre book, simply get off the ferry and the room/campsite/apartment owners will come to you, so you can choose there and then (and pit them against each other to get the best deal;)).

Thanks for your suggestions! Meteora looks great, hopefully we'll go there, just wondering how much there is to do in the area? Is just one night there enough?

That's what I spent there, one night. You'll want two days / one night though becasue the monestaries are open on differnt days. for example, some may be open tues., thurs, sat, and some others mon, wed, fri., etc.. Thanks because they are active monestaries and the monks/nuns need some peace.

The lanscape all around there is also really beautiful.
