The front-page headline in the Montral Gazette this morning reads:

Mayor's royal faux pas
Peck on princess pushes protocol

Seems our mayor didn't know that one is not supposed to kiss royalty on the cheek, including Princess Margriet! To his credit, he just did what everyone here does when they meet people.

The story:

Mayor Gerald Tremblay welcomed Princess Margriet of the Netherlands to Montreal yesterday with an affectionate two-cheek kiss.

But bussing royalty is a no-no, according to Canadian protocol officials, and there were gasps as the mayor planted his kisses on the princess.

Princess Margriet was obviously taken aback by the spontaneous gesture....

...and how many times can the word "protocol" be used in one sentence...

One official with the Dutch entourage refused to say the mayor had made a gaffe. "To say that it was a breach of protocol would embarrass the person who may have breached protocol - and that, of course, would be a breach of protocol."

Guess there was no kissing in the Ottawa civic hospital delivery room that day either...
Princess Margriet was born in Ottawa in January 1943, where her mother, Queen Juliana, spent five years in exile during the Second World War. So that Margriet would retain her royal status, the federal government declared the delivery room in Ottawa's civic hospital Dutch territory and flew the Dutch flag from the Peace Tower so the princess would be a Dutch national. She spent the first five years of her life growing up in Stornaway, which today is the residence of the federal opposition leader.

I was taking a walk in the Old Port of Montreal yesterday and "bumped" into Princess Margiet. I didn't know who the middle-aged lady in purple (AHHH) dress was and why all the fuss with the police escort and military band until I asked another bystander. I'm ashamed to admit that I didn't even know there was a monarchy in Holland! My bad!

Now it's my turn to apologize to the good people of Holland -- I'm so sorry that I didn't know you had a princess! I presume that you have a king and a queen as well? It's unexcusable I know, especially since I was in Amsterdam just last year! Granted I was kind of "out of it" when I was in Amsterdam, DAMN THOSE SPACE CAKES!!
