Is it worth going to the Whitsundays?

Travel Forums Australia / New Zealand & The Pacific Is it worth going to the Whitsundays?

Hi,

We have limited time in Australia and are trying to decide wether to go to the Whitsundays for a couple of days before we go to Cairns or to the Gold Coast?

Where you you suggest?

Thanks

Whitsundays over Gold Coast (if you mean Surfers Paradise by that... the gold coast stretches for a long distance), hands down.

Surfers Paradise reminds me of Las Vegas in a way.... whereas the Whitsundays are more for the scenic and (relatively) quiet getaway. Don't get me wrong, there's plenty happening at the Whitsundays but I like the atmosphere better than the high rise of Surfers Paradise.

Then again, if you mean Byron Bay by Gold Coast, the question gets a LOT trickier... what area of the GC were you thinking of ?

Hi,

Really not sure what part of GC we would go to a couple of people have mentioned it to me? Have looked into the Whitsundays as everyone says we should go, but it seems to be the place to go if you like sailing! Surley all the beaches will seem the same after you have seen a couple?

You have to do the Whitsundays. They are beautiful. Make sure you go on a proper sailing boat and not one that lets you sleep on the island overnight.

The scenery is beautiful and its the nicest way to spend 3 days. you will become really close with the people on your boat and its something you wont forget.

ENJOY! (i certainly did)

I also loved sailing at the Whitsundays! Sure the beaches might look the same, but I couldn't get enough white sand and turquoise water during the 3 day-trip . You can also go snorkelling which was another beautiful experience. As far as the GC, I totally agree with Sam! Surfers Paradise isn't worth more than driving through, but you probably shouldn't miss out on Byron Bay (book accomodation there in advance though!)

Coming from a girl who grew up on the Gold Coast - I personally would reccomend the Whitsundays....The Gold Coast is a lovely spot but can be quiet touristy and it is completely different to the Whitsundays.

'once you've seen one beach you've seen them all'

- I totally disagree. The Whitsundays will be like nothing you've ever seen before - Stunning blue aqua waters perfect for diving and snorkelling and sailing expeditions golden sandy beaches - The Gold Coast ok for Surfing has some nice spots towards Burleigh heads. I would also reccomend a trip out to Byron Bay or Ballina too.
