was wondering which language is the most useful to learn for backpacking around india? one that most people will understand- there seem to be so many dialects, its confusing!

Um actually, English is widely spoken in India!!!

But do you mean that you want to learn the Language because you like it?

Then you should (try) to learn Hindi. This is the most important language of India (India has 17 different languages but 20% speaks Hindi). I think it would be great to speak Hindi as a foreigner because you will get the best contact with the nice Indian locals,

You could also learn to wobble your head from side to side when you want to say "yes" to something

English is the unifying language and widely spoken/or understood in India.No use of learning any one particular language as it may not serve any purpose if you are touring many parts of india.
