Am I just being a complete tool or does the search tool for these forums really not work?

If anybody has had any joy with it, please educate me!!!

It works for me, but I usually try to searh "all forums" if I only search ...say "Europe" I won't get nearly the amount of returns as I had hoped. I also start out very specific, if that doesn't work I try to make it a more general search. :)

It works on this end... but it's not very good at searching for multiple words.... ie. if you are searching for spain accommodation, you have to type spain AND accommodation (kind of like Altavista back in the day...). That will bring up all instances where both are mentioned in a thread. It only searches over the last three months, so the advanced search form is often a good bet if you want to look back further...

Can be improved, for sure

Just discovered what I'm doing!!

I've been entering the keyword and hitting ENTER on my keyboard as opposed to clicking the SEARCH radio button!!

Hey Sam...

I was trying to use the search tool, too, and I could not get even a single result! It was crazy! I've even typed in '+' and '-' things, and it yielded no results, and I knew that there were threads about that subject somewhere . . . Maybe it was too general or something, the subject? I don't know. :S

Thanks, though, at least I will know when to search with an "AND".

Reece and I were having a similar problem. He had been discussing Aylesbury in a thread "somewhere" - he couldn't remember the forum or to whom he had commented. It had been within the past 2 weeks. After doing both a basic search and advanced search - with no results - he posted a thread in Off Topic requesting help. I had also read the Aylesbury comments, but like Reece, couldn't remember where. All my attempts to find it with the advance search function produced only the Help thread Reece posted - not the original thread which mentioned Aylesbury. The original thread was finally found in Off Topic, but it took reading the threads rather than finding it through the search feature.

Maybe when they took 'Off Topic' out of the listings, it took it out of the search menu also? (Just a thought, but take it with a grain of far as computers go-I only know how to point and click;))

i lead to believe there are many discussions on new york but i only found few threads by scrolling page per page (i was kinda thinkin there were more threads on ny though) so i tried search on nyc, ny, new york, newyork, new york AND fun, new york AND activity, new york AND guide, new york AND cost (back to even 1 year log & in all forum)....and Nope, search aint find nething altho did tried pressing "enter" instead of search...hopefully this will improve in the future, it's aight..take our time...;)

p.s there's no such thing as 'board member signature' right?

can in anyway our search function be improved lot better...

ive been a little dissapointed over past week and even today trying to trace threads i was interested in for example if it was an old thread and i subscribed to it but nobody reply for a long time (so no email notification) & i did not bookmarked it, how do i find it? (instead of goin thru threads by threads from one forum topic to another).

is there a place where i can find list of threads i subscribed to?

The forum search function is lacking, I agree. It's probably as good as Altavista used to be (remember those days :) ) but we are spoiled by search engines like Google!

Anyway, there is work to be done here and we will get around to it but it's not the highest or priorities I am afraid. You can see the ten latest threads that you have posted in via your member profile but this won't take you back that far I agree.

The surest way is the subscribe function and getting email notifications. However, if you then want to find an old thread and no one has posted in it, it can take some time to locate with the rate of postings happening currently...

If I am looking for something that I know is on the site, I sometimes do a search on google for the name of that thread and include the word travellerspoint in the search. That usually gets me pretty far but it's not ideal. It doesn't matter for me since I have a google search built into my browser so I don't have to leave the site but a lot of people (those using internet explorer without having the google toolbar installed) would need to leave the site. Not ideal therefore...

Pete, any ideas?
