Actually, I plan to make some improvements very soon. The search form being used for the blogs at the moment is far more advanced and that's what I'd like to do for the forums as well (no more need for AND operators, etc.). It also includes word suggestions, which is nice :) Basically, people have come to expect search forms to behave like Google, so we effectively need to make ours behave like that as well.

Still, for you not to find many results for 'New York' seems strange even with the current search. I don't think that's due to an error in the search - more likely that that's how many threads there actually have been in the last year that have had the phrase 'New York' in them. Could be wrong though ;)

Actually Peter, someone posed the question about Bali...I tried the search, and it turned up zero. When I manually looked through the pages I found four Threads about Bali in the first 3 pages alone?
(I think Isa and Reece broke the search button too! ;))

That happens to me, too! I was looking for Sam's "Blog" thread yesterday (and realized this morning that it was right there on the front page all along), and searched for blog, blogs, blogging, blogger, blogged (hey, I tried them all). All I got were two old threads about annoying bloggers.

Shouldn't it have found Sam's (very recent) thread, too?

Hmm, yes it should. Ok, so something is definitely not working then!! I'd better up this on the priority list..

Ok, just made a tweak to the indexing procedure, re-indexed it and the results are looking much better with 22 results for blog in the last month.

Ok, now for some major improvements. I've just fixed it so it will now do the following:

  • allo wsearches for threads where a specific user has participated in
  • allow 'natural queries', more like Google basically
  • be nicer when there are no results
  • offer spelling suggestions
  • highlight the term you were searching for in the context summary
  • handle errors better

Hope you all like it :) I think this is what a forum search should behave like.
