Kate,

July, August and December are when airfares are at there highest from the UK. Go any other time and you should be able to pick up a direct flight for just over £400 (you might get very lucky and get a little cheaper). A non-direct flight is up to £100 cheaper. Accommmodation in Thai is very cheap - you can get a very basic room for just a few pounds a day. A nice, comfortable hotel can cost around £10 a night.

WestEasttravel, STA, Travelbag, Flight Centre are good places to look for a cheap flight. Most flights go to Bangkok, but there are a few charter flights straight to Phuket now.
