I would suggest Peru and Brazil as places you must go.

Peru: I have never done the Inka trail but i have always wanted to do it. If I were you I would go to Guzco, Puno (lake Titicaca), and Lima.

In Brazil I would suggest: Amazon, Pantanal, Iguassu Falls, and Bahia. There is actually a lot you can do in Bahia, there is Salvador (with its beautiful colonial old city, and the culture ther is very rich), Sauipe (If you are interested on a quiet beach), Praia do Forte (If you are interested in Beach with nightlife), and Chapada Diamantina (The Chapada Diamantina’s mountainous landscape contains hundreds of waterfalls, large caves, and rivers with natural swimming pools, it is a reeeeeealy good place to go hiking).

I live in Salvador, so believe me when I tell you that Bahia is the place to be.

have a look at the site below, you will find a lot of information there:

Hope you have a good trip!

In my opinion Macchu Picchu/Cuzco and Rio are definitely `must see`s. Don´t spend less than 5 days on each. You would regret if you had to leave in few days from anyone of the two.
Rio can be safe, specially if you don´t stay in Copacabana. Too touristy, you know - it attracts thieves and prostitutes.
Stay on a bed & Breakfast, for example, and the owners will help you to choose the best places where to go.
