I have 3 siblings and I prefer travelling with others but getting time away from the group to go exploring. Somehow the experience of travelling is heightened when you can share it with someone.

I definitely agree with that. Even weeks, months, and years after the trip, it's really cool when you can talk to a friend and say "remember when...".

When you experience it by yourself, it's just not quite the same (the shared memory seems to be more powerful).

I guess there are pros and cons to traveling with others and traveling solo.

There is also a limit to what your friends will want to hear about your adventures when they weren't with you.

I do think that many only children learn how to entertain themselves, mainly out of necessity, and therefore do not "feel alone" even when they are alone.

I definitely agree with that. That's exactly the way I am.

I'm one of two sisters in our family, and I too love to travel alone. In my case, I think it's because I'm the "shy" one in the family, and travelling takes me completely out of my shell. It's amazing - like night and day.

I don't know if its different for those majority of you with siblings, if you have any particular types, like one traveller in the family, if it could ever be that general? :)[/quote]

I have two younger brothers and I am definitely the traveller in the family. The one in the middle isn't interested in going away at all (he thinks I'm a freak, I think he's a nerd, but we love each other:)) and the younger one only goes on 1 week-holidays with his male friends (will see when he grows out of that;))
I really can't decide if I prefer travelling on my own or with others, depends on where I travel and with who.

hmmm...I wonder if it has anything to do with birth order?
