I was told (in the UK) I need to pay taxes even for gifts sent to me from overseas. Is this true?
How much is the applicable taxes?
Any idea where I can get more info on this?
thx

yes - just make your parcell as small/light as possible and undervalue your gifts on the custom declaration.

I used to send an expensive L'Oreal conditioner abroad as a herbal shampoo - no problems.

Thanks!

How about people sending gifts to me (when I'm staying in UK)? Do I have to pay tax too?

yes - if intersepted by customs here. That's why the parcell shoud be unsuspecting.

The postman will come with your parcell and a custom invoice - if not paid within 2 weeks the parcell goes back to customs depo and destroyed/sold by the government.

1 more question.
Is the tax rate same as VAT of 17.5%?

if suspected your parcell will be opened and it's content re-evaluated.

luxury goods would have a few hundred percent tax - making them as costly as you would buy them in the shops (plus parcell costs)

Umm ... not sure if it's a watertight system.;) I'll test it out though
Thx for the info.

Customs taxes can be a real sting and a shock if your not expecting them. They are usually around 4 to 5 % on top of the value of the item plus VAt at 17.5% plus a fee from the delivery company. They will ask for the fee when they deliver the parcel and will not let you have it unless you pay on the door. Usually, if the person sending the parcel puts "gift" as the item or "used xxxx" then this can usually lower the excise duty, as well as devaluing the item as much as you can. But you will obvioulsy lose that money if the item is valuable and gets lost/broken in transit.
