For those of you who dont know what a "briar" is, it is a thorny stem of a plant, and that is how I feel today!!! GRRRRRR
I need your sympathy.
I got home from work last night in a great mood. The sun was shining, I had just spent the last few hours sitting outside having a few beers with my friends from work and was really relaxed. I noticed a registered letter in my post which I thought was weird so i opened it first.
It told me that I am being fined 125 euro!!! for a litter offence. There has to be some mistake!!!!!!! I never litter. I recycle as often as I can, and I certainly do not throw things from my car window which is the offence in this case.
It specified a date and a general area for where this offence is supposed to have taken place. Nothing else, except that if I do not pay within 21 days I have to go to court!
I'm wracking my brains here to think how this has happened!! Possibly the only thing I would throw from my car would be the butt of an apple or something that would decompose quickly. Never litter!
So, I'm feeling very cross today.
You dont tend to get very far when you try to argue your way with the Irish police. I'm not expecting to get off the fine. But it galls me to hand over 125 euro (FROM MY TRAVEL FUND!!) for something I know I didnt do.
I know how you feel Eve. Last month i had to pay a loan company £25 because i cancelled a direct debit - what annoyed me was that i didn't actually owe any money at all. So they fined me because when they said when the automatic direct debit tried to get 0 pence out of my account, the request was denied and i had to pay a fee!!! How crazy is that - basically being fined for owing no money.
My sympathy to you anyway, the little person always gets screwed over.
Oh you poor, poor baby! Hugs and kisses to make you feel better: xxxooo That really sucks.
This is a very interesting fining sysytems though. Why didn't the police just stop you and fine you on the spot instead of mailing you the bill? I've never heard of being fined through the mail before.
I got a traffic ticket just last week for making a "big American stop" (actually he said "un gross arret americain" in Fernch). I wasn't aware that there was a difference between Canadian and American stops. I was in the wrong though, I slowed down significantly at the stop sign but didn't come to a full stop. But it was on a small, residential street with no other cars around. I never expected the police to steak-out there. Sneaky little bastards!

Are they using video cameras along the streets in that area, Eve? It could be that the "littering" incident was taped. One would think the police would/could give you that much info about the ticket. It may be a mistake... (Obviously, you believe/know it is.) Possibly a transcription error in recording the license plate number or something on that order. I would try getting a bit more info if you can. That's a good chunk of money to hand over for something you didn't do.
Were you at that place at that time? If not prove to them otherwise.
Lol! That's the funny part. It happened deep in the Irish countryside - no where near a town or village. I just dont get it.
Its very very weird. The address recording the location of the incident is near my home. I live out in the sticks. Very very suss!
Do you have neighbours with bad intentions? Maybe one of them called one of those "tattle-tale" lines...
On a related note, I go absolutely livid whenever the police here flash their lights bacause they can't wait 30 seconds for the light to turn green or whatever. They just zoom through and then turn off their lights again. Hey! Hello! You're supposed to be upholding the law and setting a good example! We can all see you've got nowhere important to go at the moment!
Maybe I'm just too naive...
I know this is going to be a pain in the ass, but definitely consider visiting the police station that issued the citation. I would definitely check with them to see if there were cameras along the roadside - here they attach them to electrical lines and such. (Tossing an apple core would probably still be considered littering because it wasn't disposed of in a trash receptacle - biodegradable or not.) It does sound quite suspicious so taking a pro-active approach may get you the info to fight it. Again, a pain in the ass - but it may save you 125Euros of hard earned travel money.

Maybe... Do they immediately turn into the nearest donut shop after that??
in ireland someone can call the cops and get u fined for littering with no evidance or anything??
Thats bloody stupid!
