Hiya, was thinking it would be safer to get this prior to leaving for my trip in August, however, Cambodian visas seem to be a little hard to come by in England... nearest embassy is Paris which isnt much good as theyll need my passport to process it! How long will it take, and how safe is it to get this on the Vietnamese/Cambodian boarder? Bit worried about men with guns and tanks and things and them sticking me in prison for trying to sneak my way into the country... (I mean, like I'd really want to live there and all...) Assuming getting it processed on the border is my only option? Anyway had any trouble with this process? Obviously I'm a loan female traveller, bit scary! (yes, wimp I know!)
any tourist agency in vietnam will do it for you - or on the border
you should be no problem at the border, from experience
Hi Tamo !
I have just come back from Cambodia. I start from Ho Chi Minh city - Viet Nam to Moc Bai border gate with Cambodia.
From my own experience, I can confidently tell you that it is very easy to apply for a visa to Cambodia at the Moc Bai border gate. You DO NOT need the travel agency to do it for you.
I applied for a visa at the Cambodia consulate in Ho Chi Minh city. It costed me 400.000 Vietnam Dong ( Vietnam currency), equals to 25$. And then I bought the ticket from Ho Chi Minh city to Phnompenh at Pham Ngu Lao backpack area, just 4$ for one-way ticket. It was a big surprise for me at the border gate. I saw those travelling together with me on the same bus getting a visa very easily, and even with the same fee, 25$.
However, I suggest you apply for a visa at the Cambodia consulate in Ho Chi Minh city beforehand
It is very safe here, no mens with guns, no tanks, no prison.
So, don't worry about the visa.
I'm in a similar situation to you - I am due to enter Cambodia from Thailand in just over a week.
The general advice seems to be to get a visa in advance if possible as there can sometimes be problems (which often take loads of time and, money). The good news is that a Cambodian Embassy has recently opened in the St. John's Wood area of London. See www.cambodianembassy.org.uk ... I got a relative to obtain my visa and they collected it a few days later without any problem. They're very pleasant to deal with by phone too.
Hope this helps.
Thanks David, I had heard that one had just come to London, but nobody seemed to have any info on it let alone a webpage! Will give them a ring some time... why do all these embassy places insist on having such stupid opening times? What about us meer mortals that have to work full time and cant go and visit them at 9am?!
Anyway, I shall beable to finally sort somthing now without worrying about getting arrested at the border... Thanks very much!
Hope you enjoy your time in Cambodia, let us know how it goes! Have a wicked time!
