I like the idea of individual maps and map pins. The member could correspond their pins on their maps with entries in their diary, travel log and photo gallery. Letting the member 'tag" their own pins would save database space. Not everyone who has visited France visited Paris, but maybe they visited every little village. Try maintaining a database encompassing everyplace everywhere would be monumental.

Would it be possible to have a set of pin colors? Something like - blue pins = my 2001 trips, red = 2002, etc. It wouldn't have to be millions and billions of colors, but a small palette to use might be nice...

One big map for general use would be overwhelmed with pins in some areas and nothing in others. Even if they were color-coded, it would still be a mess to look at and decipher who was who.

I definitely think it would be cool (using one or some of the ways described or whatever) if we could "pin" not just cities but also "places." Like Machu Picchu, Angkor Wat, Masai Mara, etc..

And maybe an "underwater" section for Mr. & Mrs. Isa .

To summarize a little :) Something more detailed on a personal level (with specific trip information displayed in some way) and a broader overview perhaps for general purposes - as in, click on the USA to see all the members who have travelled there and what they have to say about it...

How does that sound as a general idea?

The one problem that you start running into is sheer size as isadora notes. Another problem, perhaps even bigger, is misspellings or doubling up on the same location. It looks fine of course on a personal map where a pin is stuck for more general purposes, but the neatest would be if on a broader level, everyone that has been to Amsterdam could have their trip displayed on an 'Amsterdam' page.... If some members have pegged Amsterdam where Utrecht is, that would get incredibly tricky (and that's an easy one :) )

Of course, we could leave out adding the general thing altogether but part of the whole fun would be to make it possible to see everyone who had travelled not only to certain country, but also to a certain city in that country.

Decisions, decisions

You're right Sam, big decisions... (Don't visit any of the "cafes" in Amsterdam before making those decisions... ;) )

I do like the underwater idea, Jeff - there are several divers on TP. But, we can just put our pins in the blue areas of our maps and correlate them to our travel log and photos.

Good luck with the logistics Sam!

Hi Sam,

I like the idea you just described, about being able to put the mouse over Amsterdam and getting a page that would have comments on Amsterdam from people that have been there, etc.. At least I think that's what you were discribing .

That's exactly the kind of idea... it would fill up quickly for a mouseover, but that could just be one comment with the full line up being on a separate page. I'd better get coding now

Yea, After a mouse over look, you could click and get the page to see all the people that have been there and their comments. Sounds good to me.

OOOhhhh, I like that idea!!!

(Sam, we'll have your meals brought in so you can keep coding. Which do you prefer? Thai or Italian?)

Hehehe, as Pete already mentioned this is actually now very high on the old priority list (I was actually talking to someone that might be able to help yesterday about exactly this without even having seen this thread!) I've already cancelled all my summer travels I had planned so there should be some time there; now, is that good or bad? and hehehe

Sam
ps. Thai would be fantastic
