buses for shorter distances (regular ones, departing from the bus stations - and not the 'touristy' ones).

trains for longer journeys (you can walk and stretch yourself or even get an overnight sleeper).

Melaka and Penang in Malaysia are must.

In Thailand try to get north to Chang Mai and Doi Inthanon National Park.

I think you can skip Laos.

Hi natters,

Singapore: Visit the Zoo (it's the best one I've evn been to) and do the Night safari.

Cambodia: Obviously Angkor Wat. Probably 3 days would be good.

Vietnam: Hanoi and then North to Sapa and the area around there. Beautiful scenery and expotic hilltribes. Also Halong Bay. It also will probably be less hot up North because of the altitude.

Loas: Luang Prabang (and take a trip on the Mekong.

By the way, even though you say "you're clueless," what places have you heard about so far that you know that you want to visit?

No, I really am clueless!!!

Singapore- do want to do the Night Zoo
Malaysia- want to go to Penang on route
Thailand- Ko Samui and Koh Pha Ngan?? not sure which are the best islands to go. Bangkok and Chang Mai as we plan to go to the elephant sanctuary in Lampang
On to Vietnam via Laos if we had to. Up to Hanoi if possible, down to Saigon, into Cambodia- Angkor and Phnom Penh, back to Bangkok then we fly to Singapore.

I don't know if its possible or what the highlights are!!!! x

All sounds great. I'd say the only major highlight that you're missing is Northern Vietnam, you really should try and travel up North toward the Chinese border into the highlands to Sapa. And also along the coast to Halong Bay.

Hi, if you travel to Bankok you can take Tiger Airways to Singapore and from Singapore to Hanoi ( SGN) as well. Cost only USD 25/way. From Hanoi you go to Viengtien by bus ( 15 USD)
Highlight of Vietnam is: HANOI; SAPA; HaLONG Bay. Hoi An, Hue, HCMC. Mekong delta; Cuchi Tunnel
-snip-
