Travellers cheques in Bolivia or Peru

Travel Forums Central/South America & The Caribbean Travellers cheques in Bolivia or Peru

Me and my wife start travelling in about 3 weeks after living in Bolivia for 2 years. I normally don't use travellers cheques but unfortunately this time we (kind of) have to. Any recommendations where to get them because here (Cochabamba) you pay 2 to 6% commission when you BUY them. And we need a lot as we are going to travel through Peru, Ecuador, Colombia, Central America and Mexico.
Any advice is welcome.

Is there an American Express office nearby? I think they only charge 1% commission. How far is Cochabamba from la Paz?

Don't know if there is one in Cochabamba have to check it out.
Cochabamba is only 7 hrs from La Paz so if there is none in Cochabamba it's better to get them in La Paz I suppose.

Hey janszham,

Found this info on the web:

Travel Service Offices:

Bolivia:

La Paz
Magri Turismo
(5912) 2442727

Santa Cruz
Magri Turismo
(5913) 3343559

You better check about the commission though. It's been a while since I bought any from them. Here in the US, members of AAA (Auto Club) can get them with NO commission, so that's what I've done.

Cheers.

There is a AE office in Cochabamba but am not sure if they only buy them or sell them as well. Going to check it out today.

Just checked it out and there is one bank on plaza Quintanilla (Los Tiempos building) called banco Santa Cruz which sells traveller cheques for 1% commission.
All sorted.
