yes, I think that for someone who has learned the western alphabet with his/her native language, Spanish and/or Italian are the easiest languages to learn... And so melodious!

Quoting MelesMeles

Easiest language to learn is the foreign language, that you hear every day. That of course depends on region. For me English has been easiest to learn, mostly thanks to internet. Only problem is that I need some practise of speaking english, before I can feel confident about it.

We are two!!!!

Hey, and what about Russian? Have you ever tried?
I think that the easiest to learn is the language close to your native. As for me I think I'm a kind of a polyglot. My natives are Russian and Ukrainian. But I can understand and even speak after few days in any Eastern Europe country. The roots of languages are the same so it's very easy for me. I easily speak Polish and Serbian, a bit Czech, understand Bulgarians and Slovak... What to say more... ;)
As for the others - it was much more easier to me to study French when I've already had English background. Now I'm trying to start Spanish - and the words are so familiar after studying French... Italian is close to Spanish... and so on... why not?

Galka,

I would pick Russian as one of the hardest language to learn...Arabic, Hebrew, Turkish, Greek, Latin, Mandarin, German, Gaelic, Old English are very hard to master... in terms of grammar-wise complexity.

Indonesian seems like it would be a pretty easy language to learn - it's all phonetic, and for plurals you just say the same word twice!

Yes, Rob! Malay and Malay are the easiet language to learn! Looking from the phonetics system itself...

hmm..
English is universal.

I find easier to learn are Tagalog or Filipino, Indonesian (with similarities to Filipino), and Nihonggo, and Swahili.

About the German language - I feel like drooling saying Ausgeschlossen!
Es wird nicht so heiƟ gegessen wie gekocht.

Gaelic- I will bring a disgrace pronouncing the words.
French- Elegant but my mind's memory box is the question.
Hebrew- I only know Shalom! Selah.
Spanish- Que horror!

To answer your question, the bottom line is that no one will disagree if I said that the easiest language to learn is the body language.

[ Edit: Sorry, no promotions please... ]

Cheska, wow...you seem know a lot of languages...I would think many europe-indo languages are hard to learn. On contrary, many mother-tougues in SE asia seem easy to learn after all. Such as the beautiful language - Lunna Thai...smooth and melodic! (grammar is comparatively simpler than many european languages with complicated conjugaison!)

There's always Esperanto....

Does anybody still speak it?

Thanks Ciku. I think all of us can do the same. For me , I still need to know more. I keep on practicing whenever I am out travelling. It is always fun to listen to the way people converse, not being nosy or whatever. Some languages you will really find musical to your ears, some will make you feel as if you are in some kind of trouble coz shouting is the way they talk normally. What I find it really hard to learn is the art of writing.
