My mother tongue : Mandarin, am self-study the classic -Chinese now (very fluent)

Other chinese dialects: Cantonese (fluent),GuangXi (grannie is from GuangXi, China);Hokkien (dad is a HokKien); Hakka ( ex-neighbours speak a lot!)

I teach English and Malay.

I learn French for 2 years but am okay with reading and writing - speaking is my poorest part coz it's not widely-spoken here.

Can understand some basics in Spanish as I sing spanish songs a lot!

Learning German occasionally at home (in PC) by downloading the audio software;

Took a course learning basics of Japanese in Hiragana for 1 semester;

Also at the same time, took 1 month of learning Jawi but it's COMPLETELY out of mind now;

Know the basic strokes in Korean's writing;

Speak simple Nepalian (Mum introduces her colleages from Nepal);

Understand the simple kids songs in Siamese and Indo-Malay;

India friends are teaching me Tamil what to say during Deepavali Festival; and i am interested in Bollywood's songs - Hindi!

Good News!!! Friends who will going to finish his medical study in Moscow promise to teach me Russian, hooray!

My future focus would be:

1.French (will continue my course in Alliance Fran├žais in Jan, 2006)
2.Spanish (will take a course with a friend of mine, an eurasian whose mother is from Portugese)and
3.Italian (i got a free 'teacher' from Yahoo!Chat..thanks, god)

To tell you the truth, I am going to renovate my new bedroom with rows of placards to 'bed' my foreign language books; my family says i might get crazy with those 'horizons' of books, references, CDs and DVDs (films) crammed in such a small room...hahaha

Should specialize in a few languages first and am seeking for daily practises...

Crazy book-worms,
Lee

Hey you Chinese speakers out there.

Can 2 people who speak and understand different chinese dialects speak and understand each other? Are they similar enough? Or would they both need to know Cantonese and use that?

Mandarin Chinese is China's Standard language,not Cantonese!
When 2 people who speak different chinese dialects talk together,they always use Mandarin;)

My mother tongue is Shanghainese, which is a dialect spoken in the city of Shanghai and gibberish to the rest of the Chinese population. I learnt Mandarin (the official language) at school. English when I moved to California, and then French when I moved to Quebec. I speak all 4 fluently, but my French has an English accent, because I learnt it too late (at 17). I've been meaning to learn Spanish for years now. The only Spanish phrases I know are from Latin dance music: "Baila baila conmigo...".

Err, I beg to differ. Mao is not the idol of ALL Chinese people, sorry to break the news to you.
